Are You a Dive Professional?

Or Are You Planning To Become One?

This page contains crucial information that will help you in achieving a successful career in the diving industry!

Hi, my name is Stephan Becker. I am a diving instructor and the founder of Beautiful Stephan Becker, Founder of Beautiful OceansOceans, an international coral reef education, mapping and conservation organization.

When I became a dive professional in 2003, I soon realized that something crucial was missing in my training: I was certified to lead divers on the coral reef, but I didn't have a clue what to say about the coral reef itself!

Most of the coral reef creatures were a mystery to me. I didn’t know their names, where to find them on the reef, or why they did what they did – I didn’t know anything!

Like so many other dive professionals before me, I just copied what my peers were doing: providing dive briefings that merely focused on maximum depths, bottom time, and other safety information.

Occasionally, I identified a fish or two – nothing to inspire a novice scuba diver, let alone an experienced one. I was quick to notice that most of the divers on the boat grew quite bored listening to my dive briefings, but I didn’t know how to do better.

I was afraid to face questions about the coral reef coming from divers and snorkelers. Even though I was a “certified” dive professional, I knew perfectly well that I was unable to answer most of their diving related questions!

I was eager to learn more about the coral reef and the creatures I saw everyday in the water. I wanted to become a kind of coral reef expert.

I felt like a big chunk of my training as a dive professional had been left out. My lack of knowledge was embarrassing in front of my customers!

Even my diving agency couldn't help. There was nothing out there that could!

I felt totally unprepared for my job as a Divemaster. I wanted to provide dive briefings that would blow away my customers. I was impatient to show them the most interesting aspects of the reef and explain what they were seeing in a meaningful, engaging way. Something crucial was missing in the diving world. It was then that I realized I had to come up with a solution myself, a solution that would help not only me, but all other dive professionals who felt the same way.

The solution:

a Science Instructor Development Course (SIDC)!

Are you ready for a quick test that shows you what I mean?

Do you know the answers to the following basic coral reef questions? Answers are provided further down – don’t cheat!

1. What are the three groups of consumers that can be found on the coral reef?dow
2. Why do damselfish attack divers many times their size?
3. How do juvenile butterfly fish attract their clients to a cleaning station?
4. How do you tell active and passive predatory fish apart?
5. Why do parrotfish sleep in a translucent cocoon at night?
6. What strategy do nurse sharks employ to trap crabs, their favorite food?
7. What are the six major coral reef zones of a typical fringing coral reef?
8. What body part of a fish provides you with clues as to whether it chases at night or during the
day?
9. What do you call the relationship between a remora and a shark?
10. Why is the sea salty?

How did you do?

Score 1-2:
Stop right there! Your knowledge about the coral reef is a serious mess! Click here and send in your application for a Science Instructor Development Course right away! You’re like a Paris tour guide who confused the Eiffel Tower with an oil rig! :-)
Score 3-4: That’s a good start, but are you really going to impress divers with such sketchy knowledge of the coral reef? You have so much to benefit from a SIDC!
Score 5-6: Your basic knowledge of the coral reef ecosystem is great! Take just one or two Science Instructor Development Courses with Beautiful Oceans and go to new depths!
Score 7-8: What year did you say you completed your PhD in marine biology?
Score 9-10: You’re a star! Please submit your resume to become a Beautiful Oceans Science Instructor Trainer!

Solutions:

To 1: Herbivore, omnivore, carnivore.
To 2: To attract female damselfishes for mating. In effectively
defending their algae patch, male damselfishes demonstrate to females that they will be able to defend her eggs against intruders.
To 3: By wiggling their tail.
To 4: Passive predators lay motionless on the ocean floor, while active predators swim around to chase their prey.
To 5: To mask their scent and thus become unnoticed to predators roaming the reef at night.
To 6: Nurse sharks have been observed lifting themselves up to form a shadowy area under which crabs like to hide.
To 7: Shore zone, back reef zone, flat reef zone, reef crest zone, fore reef zone, drop off zone.
To 8: Their eyes. Night predators for example have bigger eyes because they depend on better vision during the night.
To 9: A symbiotic relationship. More precisely, it’s a commensalistic relationship – one in which neither organism is favored nor harmed.
To 10: Because of mineral depositions originating from the land. The concentration of minerals in the water increases due to evaporating water masses, leaving the water with a “salty aftertaste”.

Just imagine the success you could have as a dive professional!

What Dive Professionals Say:

"WOW is all I can say. I have learned so much in the first course that I can't wait for the next. I just need to do my webcam presentation, and then get the rest of my assignments graded. Thanks so much for creating a great program!" Colyn Zylka, Divemaster, Delafield, Wisconsin

"I wanted to let you know that my course materials arrived today. I must say those are some of the nicest course materials I have ever seen. In 2 years of college and throughout all my PADI/DAN training I haven't seen materials that well put together, organized with such great images and descriptions. Thanks!" Jeremy Gosnell, Dive Instructor, Oakland, California

“It's amazing that after so many years of diving your courses were able to completely change the way I look at coral reefs. Taking the Beautiful Oceans Science Instructor Development Course (SIDC) was like switching on a light.” Errol, Divemaster, Barbados

"I work in coral reef management on a daily basis, yet your course not only refreshed, but brought new insight and knowledge. For example, redlip blennies lacking a swim bladder explains a lot of the behaviour divers and snorkelers observe on the reef with respect to this little creature. I am really impressed - this is a fantastic course, and a must for any diving professional." Angelique, Scientist and Scuba Instructor - Coastal Zone Management Unit, Government of Barbados, 35 years - Oistens, Barbados

“I have been very impressed by the high quality of the course material available to both the students and the instructor. The material is of the highest possible quality. It is, in fact, extremely impressive." Darcy Kieran, PADI Course Director and President of ‘Total Diving’, a PADI Career Development Center, Montreal, Canada

"This new venture provides a good introduction to coral reefs. However, it also gives much information to interest experienced reef watchers. I certainly learned things from it, and I've been diving for over 20 years, have a biology degree and regularly consult a veritable library of sea-life and marine biology books. It is also refreshing to see a project with such a commitment to preserving the marine environment that they donate 10% of their profits to marine conservation." Jill Studholme, Editor, SCUBA News, Scubatravel.co.uk
